The short version

  • It makes chlorine. A saltwater pool is a chlorine pool with a different delivery mechanism.

How it actually works

You dissolve salt in the pool to a specified concentration. Water passes through a cell containing electrodes; a current splits the dissolved salt and produces chlorine in the water. That chlorine sanitizes the pool exactly as tablet chlorine does, and then reverts toward salt, and the cycle continues.

So the CDC’s published targets apply identically: at least 1 ppm free chlorine and pH 7.0–7.8. You still test, you still balance, and you still need a test kit. What you stop doing is handling and storing tablets.

The cell is the number that decides everything. Manufacturers publish cell life in operating hours, and replacement costs a substantial fraction of the original unit. Divide the replacement cost by the seasons of cell life you expect and compare that to a season of tablets — that is the honest comparison, and it is one salt system marketing rarely presents.

Corrosion, and checking before you commit

Salt water is mildly corrosive, and above-ground pools have metal frames, metal fittings and metal ladders. Not every frame is intended for salt use, and adding it to one that is not can void the warranty as well as shortening the frame’s life.

Check your specific pool manufacturer’s guidance before you buy the generator, not after. This is a genuinely common and expensive oversight.

You still need shock

A frequent surprise. Salt systems generate a maintenance level of chlorine, not a shock level. When an algae bloom happens or a busy weekend loads the water, you reach for cal-hypo exactly as a tablet owner would. Some units have a boost mode; it is not equivalent to shocking.

Who it is for

Someone with a larger above-ground pool that stays up across seasons, who genuinely dislikes handling chemicals, who has read the cell replacement cost and accepted it, and who has confirmed their pool frame is rated for salt.

What works

What doesn't

Skip it if: A pool that gets drained every autumn. You lose the salt with the water each year, and the payback period never arrives.
