Cloudy pool water: work out which of four problems you have

Everyone hands you a list of possible causes. What you need is a way to tell them apart, because the fix for one makes another worse.

The short version

  • Test before you dose. The four causes need four different fixes and two of them make the others worse.
  • Milky white is usually chemistry or filtration. Green tinge is algae and a different job.
  • Clarifier is the last resort, not the first. It only helps when chemistry reads correct and water is still milky.
  • Cloudy water in the first month is normal. So is cloudy water for a few days after opening or after shocking.

Start here: two questions

Before any chemical goes in, answer these.

1. What color is it? Milky, gray or white-hazy points at chemistry or filtration. Any green tinge, even faint, means algae and you should go there instead — the sequence for algae is different and doing the cloudy-water fix first wastes time.

2. What does the test strip say? Free chlorine, pH and total alkalinity. Without those three numbers everything below is guesswork.

Cause 1: not enough free chlorine

The most common cause and the cheapest fix. The CDC publishes a minimum of 1 ppm free chlorine, or at least 2 ppm when a stabilizer is present — and since every trichlor tablet contains cyanuric acid, 2 ppm is the number most above-ground owners should be holding.

If your reading is well under that, raise it. If it is at or near zero, shock rather than trickling tablets in, and use enough — half a dose twice does not equal a full dose once.

Cause 2: pH out of range

The CDC notes that chlorine’s ability to kill germs decreases as pH rises, particularly above 8.0. So you can have a perfectly respectable free chlorine reading and effectively unsanitized water. Correct pH, then re-test chlorine before adding any more.

If pH will not stay corrected, your total alkalinity is the actual problem and you are treating a symptom.

Cause 3: the filter

Two failure modes: blocked, or simply not run long enough. Check the flow at the return jet — if it is visibly weaker than it was, rinse the cartridge. If rinsing does not restore it and the pleats stay gray and stiff, the cartridge is finished. Intex’s guidance is replacement roughly every two weeks in heavy use.

If the filter is clean and flow is good, check your run hours: divide gallons by the pump’s system flow rate to get hours per turnover, and make sure you are getting two turnovers a day in hot weather.

Cause 4: particles too fine to catch

Only after the first three have been ruled out. A clarifier is a coagulant — it clumps particles that are too small for your filter into ones it can catch. It does nothing whatsoever about low chlorine or a blocked filter, which is why reaching for it first is the classic expensive mistake.

Dose it correctly and then run the filter continuously, and clean the cartridge afterwards because it will load heavily. Overdosing clarifier makes the cloudiness worse, which is genuinely counterintuitive and catches people.

What not to do

Do not add several things at once. If you dose chlorine, pH adjuster and clarifier together you learn nothing about which was needed, and the interactions can make the water worse.

Do not drain and refill as a first move. It is expensive — $6.06 per 1,000 gallons at the national average — and it does not address the cause, so it will happen again.

Do not swim in it while you sort it out. Cloudy water is a safety issue as well as an aesthetic one: the CDC’s guidance for swimmers is that you should be able to clearly see the bottom of the pool.

What works

What works

A few weekends: Fine for a heatwave and a toddler. Treat it as consumable, not as a pool — it will not survive a winter in the yard.

Fixing the number beginners skip

What works

  • Raises alkalinity with only a small effect on pH, which is exactly what you want
  • Extremely cheap — it is sodium bicarbonate
  • Fixing alkalinity first stops the endless pH chase that eats a first season

What doesn't

  • Works slowly and needs circulation, so it is not a same-afternoon fix
  • Easy to overshoot, and bringing alkalinity back down is more work than raising it
  • The 80-120 ppm target is an industry convention rather than a published federal standard, so treat it as guidance

Skip it if: Emergencies. Nothing about alkalinity is urgent; it is the thing you fix first and then stop thinking about.

Questions people actually ask

Why is my pool water cloudy but chlorine is fine?
Check pH next. The CDC notes chlorine’s ability to kill germs falls as pH rises, particularly above 8.0, so you can have a respectable free chlorine reading and effectively unsanitized water. If pH is also fine, the cause is almost certainly filtration — either a loaded cartridge or not enough run hours. A clarifier is only the answer once chemistry and filtration have both been ruled out.
How long does it take for cloudy pool water to clear?
With the correct cause identified and the filter running continuously, usually one to three days. If it has not improved at all after 48 hours of continuous filtration with correct chemistry, you have diagnosed the wrong cause — go back to the top of the decision tree rather than adding more of the same chemical.
Is it safe to swim in cloudy pool water?
Not until you know why it is cloudy. Cloudiness is frequently a symptom of under-sanitized water, and it is also a safety problem in its own right — you should be able to see the bottom of the pool clearly. Test first, fix the cause, and let it clear before anyone gets in.
Will a clarifier fix cloudy pool water?
Only in one specific case: chemistry reads correct, filter flow is good, and the water is still milky because the particles are too fine for the filter to catch. A clarifier clumps them so the filter can. It does nothing at all about low chlorine, wrong pH or a blocked cartridge, which are the three more common causes. Overdosing it makes cloudiness worse.
