The sizing arithmetic

Pump sizing is the one piece of pool math genuinely worth doing, and it takes thirty seconds. You want the whole pool volume through the filter at least once a day, twice in hot weather.

Read that last column carefully. On the 15-foot pool, eight hours is only one and a half turnovers — which is fine in mild weather and marginal in a heatwave. You fix that with hours, not with a bigger pump.

What it costs to run — and the gap in the data

Here is the problem we ran into, and it is worth stating plainly because nobody else in this category does. We could not find a published wattage figure for Intex’s or Bestway’s above-ground pool pumps. Both publish flow rate freely on their product pages. Neither publishes power draw.

That means the single largest input to your annual running cost is unavailable before purchase from both of the brands that dominate this market. It is printed on the pump itself. Read it on day one, then use this table:

For a cross-check, ENERGY STAR publishes that a certified above-ground pool pump saves about $20 a year while being 11% more efficient — which implies a baseline of roughly $182 a year, or about 992 kWh. Why the timer comes before the bigger pump

Almost every “my pump is not powerful enough” complaint is actually a run-hours problem. Filtration is time, and time is cheap to add and cheap to trim.

Two electrical rules that are not negotiable

Plug the pump directly into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet. Never defeat or bypass that protection, and never run it through an extension cord that is not rated for outdoor use and for the pump’s amperage. The CPSC’s Pool Safely guidance treats electrical safety around water as fundamental rather than optional.

If your outlet is too far from where you wanted the pool, the pool moves. That constraint belongs in your siting decision, not in an improvised solution afterwards.

Cartridge or sand

The Ultra XTR line ships with a 2,100 GPH sand filter rather than a cartridge, and that is a genuine feature: no cartridges to buy repeatedly. Whether it is worth upgrading to on a smaller pool depends entirely on how many seasons you plan to keep it — the full comparison is at sand versus cartridge.

What works

  • Type A cartridges are the most widely stocked filter consumable in the US

  • Wattage is not published anywhere on the Intex site, so you cannot cost it before purchase
  • Cartridge-only, so there is a consumable every few weeks in a busy pool
  • GFCI cord length dictates where the pool can go more than people expect

Skip it if: Pools over about 6,000 gallons. Above that you are asking it to run all day to achieve one turnover, which is the expensive way to filter.

What it costs to run: Do the turnover math before you buy: 750 GPH system flow moves 4,000 gallons in 5.3 hours. Two turnovers a day is therefore about 11 hours of running. At the EIA's June 2026 US residential average of 18.34 cents per kWh, every 100 watts of pump draw running 11 hours a day for a 120-day season costs about $24. Find your wattage on the pump label and multiply.

  • Backwashing takes about two minutes versus rinsing a cartridge in the yard
  • Sand lasts years rather than weeks

  • Backwashing sends water down the drain, and that water has chemicals in it you paid for

Skip it if: A small seasonal pool that comes down every autumn. The payback period is measured in seasons, so it only works if there will be seasons.

Questions people actually ask

What size pump do I need for my above-ground pool?
Divide your gallons by the pump’s system flow rate to get hours per turnover, then aim for two turnovers a day in hot weather. Intex publishes both figures — a C530 is 530 GPH pump flow but 475 GPH system flow, and a C1000 is 1,000 and 750 respectively. Sizing on the headline number over-estimates your turnover by roughly a third.
How many watts does an above-ground pool pump use?
We checked, and neither Intex nor Bestway publishes wattage for their above-ground pool pumps — both publish flow rate only. The figure is printed on the pump itself, so read the label on day one. Once you have it: watts × hours × days ÷ 1,000 × your rate. At the EIA’s June 2026 US average of 18.34 cents per kWh, every 100 W run 8 hours a day for 120 days costs about $17.61.
Should I buy a bigger pool pump or run it longer?
Neither, usually — buy a timer. Most “my pump is not powerful enough” complaints are run-hours problems, and a schedule fixes them. And once you are getting two full turnovers a day, additional hours buy nothing: trimming a 450 W pump from 12 hours to 8 across a season saves about $40, which is more than the timer costs.
Can I use an extension cord for a pool pump?
Only one rated for outdoor use and for the pump’s amperage, and never in a way that bypasses the GFCI protection. The safest approach is to plug directly into a GFCI-protected outdoor outlet, and to treat the outlet position as a constraint on where the pool goes rather than a problem to work around.
