The short version
- Upkeep is three consumables and about twenty minutes a week. It is a routine, not a project.
- Chlorine is dosed by published volume: two 3-inch tablets weekly per 10,000 gallons (Clorox Pool&Spa).
- Filter cartridges are the recurring cost nobody budgets for. Roughly every two weeks in heavy use, per Intex’s own guidance.
- Getting alkalinity right first is the cheapest thing you can do — it stops the endless pH chase that wastes a first season of chemicals.
The three consumables
Strip away the marketing and seasonal pool upkeep is chlorine, balancers and filter media. Everything else is occasional.
Chlorine
The standing cost, dosed by volume. Clorox Pool&Spa publishes two tablets weekly per 10,000 gallons, so a 3,955-gallon pool needs about 0.8 tablets a week and a 6,981-gallon pool about 1.4. Across a 17-week season that is roughly 14 and 24 tablets respectively.

Balancers
Trichlor tablets are acidic, so pH drifts down over a season and you push it back with sodium carbonate. Separately, if your total alkalinity is low, pH will not hold anywhere at all and you will be adding adjuster every week to no effect. Fixing alkalinity once, with sodium bicarbonate, is the cheapest intervention in pool ownership and the one most first-year owners skip.
Filter media
Intex’s own guidance for Type A cartridges is replacement roughly every two weeks in heavy use, with rinsing in between. On a 17-week season that is a real recurring line, and it is the strongest argument for a sand filter on any pool you plan to keep for several years: sand lasts years, cartridges do not.
The time cost, honestly
About ten minutes, twice a week, plus the pump running on a schedule. Skim the surface. Test the water. Add chlorine to hold the level rather than to rescue it. Brush the water line. Rinse the cartridge when the flow visibly drops.
Then two bigger jobs at each end of the year: closing in autumn and opening in spring, each an afternoon. That is the whole commitment. It is not nothing, and a family deciding between a pool and a trampoline deserves to know it — but it is a routine rather than a project, and after the first month it stops requiring thought.
Where upkeep spend actually goes wrong
Almost every first-year owner overspends in the same three ways.
Chasing pH without fixing alkalinity. You add adjuster, it drifts back within days, you add more. Fix alkalinity once and the problem disappears.
Reaching for clarifier before testing. Most cloudy water is a chemistry or filtration problem, and clarifier does nothing about either. Work the decision tree first.
Under-dosing shock. Half a dose twice does not equal a full dose once. It just wastes the bag and leaves the algae alive. See shock.

- Strips are a comparison against a printed color chart, so they are directional rather than precise
- Reading them in bright sun is harder than it should be
- The bottle must be kept sealed and dry or the strips degrade quietly
Skip it if: Fine adjustment. If you are chasing a stubborn problem and need a number rather than a color band, a liquid reagent kit is the tool.
What it costs to run: 100 strips at twice-weekly testing covers roughly two seasons for one pool. The real saving is upstream: knowing your alkalinity stops you buying pH adjuster you did not need.

What works
- Dissolves slowly, so a floating dispenser meters chlorine out over days rather than hours
- Stabilized, so sunlight does not destroy your chlorine within an afternoon
- Widely stocked, so you are never hunting for it in July
What doesn't
- Every tablet adds cyanuric acid, and in a pool you never fully drain that accumulates until chlorine stops responding
- Trichlor is acidic and will pull your pH down over a season
- Tablets must be kept dry and sealed or they degrade and gas off
Skip it if: A small pool that is topped up rather than drained. Cyanuric acid only leaves with the water, so in a 1,500-gallon pool it climbs fast.
What it costs to run: The standing chemical cost of the season, and it scales directly with gallons. Watch the cyanuric acid reading on your test strip: once it is high, you are buying chlorine that cannot work, which is the most common invisible waste in a first pool year.

The consumable you will actually buy repeatedly
Type A Replacement Filter Cartridges (multipack)

Buy them in a multipack before you need them. A pool running on an exhausted cartridge is a cloudy pool, and the fix is a two-dollar part you did not have.

Skip it if: Being restored. Once the pleats are permanently gray and stiff, rinsing is not saving it.

Fixing the number beginners skip
Alkalinity Increaser (sodium bicarbonate)

The most under-bought chemical in the category. If your pH will not stay put, this is almost always the actual fix, and it is chemically just baking soda.

- Easy to overshoot, and bringing alkalinity back down is more work than raising it
- The 80-120 ppm target is an industry convention rather than a published federal standard, so treat it as guidance
Skip it if: Emergencies. Nothing about alkalinity is urgent; it is the thing you fix first and then stop thinking about.
What it costs to run: Pennies per dose, and it is the cheapest lever on your whole chemical bill: stable alkalinity means stable pH, and stable pH means the chlorine you already bought actually works.

- Not a safety cover and will not support weight — this is important
Skip it if: Being a safety barrier. A solar cover looks solid and is not; a child or pet on it goes through and under.
What it costs to run: The one accessory with a clear payback. Every gallon that does not evaporate is a gallon you do not replace at the EPA WaterSense national average of $6.06 per 1,000 gallons, and it is chlorine you do not re-dose. If you buy one thing from this hub, buy this.
Several seasons: Buy-once. Built and warranted to come back out of the box for a few years, if you store it properly.
