The short version

  • Skim before you do anything else. Floating debris is a two-minute job; sunken debris is a vacuuming session.
  • Test, then dose. Dosing without testing is how people spend money fixing problems they do not have.
  • Run the pump on a timer. Filtration is hours, and a schedule beats remembering.
  • You can safely ignore: daily testing, weekly shocking, and most of what the chemical aisle wants to sell you.

The routine, in order

The order is not arbitrary. Each step makes the next one easier or cheaper.

  1. Skim the surface

    Two minutes with a net. Leaves float for a while and then sink, and once they are on the floor you need a vacuum instead of a net. Organic debris also consumes chlorine as it breaks down, so this step is a sanitizer saving as well as a tidiness one.
  2. Test the water

    Fifteen seconds with a strip. You want free chlorine, pH, total alkalinity and — periodically — cyanuric acid. Write the numbers down for the first month; the pattern is more useful than any single reading.
  3. Adjust, in the right order

    Alkalinity first if it is off, then pH, then chlorine. Doing it in that order is the difference between one adjustment and a summer of them — here is why.
  4. Brush the water line

    Where the water meets the wall is where oils and film accumulate, and it is where algae starts. Thirty seconds with a brush prevents a ring you will otherwise have to scrub.
  5. Check the filter

    Rinse the cartridge when the flow visibly drops, and replace it when the pleats stay gray and stiff after rinsing. Intex's guidance is roughly every two weeks in heavy use.
  6. Confirm the pump schedule still fits

    Hot weather means more chlorine demand and more turnover needed. Cooler weeks mean less. Adjust the timer seasonally rather than setting it once in June.

What you can safely ignore

The chemical aisle is large and most of it is not for a seasonal above-ground pool.

Testing daily. The CDC recommends twice-daily testing for pools in regular public use. For a domestic seasonal pool, twice a week is the realistic minimum and it is enough — provided you actually do it.

Shocking weekly. Shock is a tool for a specific problem, not a routine. Shocking on a schedule wastes chemical and, if you use dichlor, quietly raises your cyanuric acid until chlorine stops working.

Clarifier as a default. It only helps in the specific case where your chemistry reads correct and the water is still milky. Test first.

Most specialty additives. Metal sequestrants, enzyme treatments and phosphate removers all solve real problems that most seasonal pools do not have.
