Pool Costs
Buying a pool in the off-season: the discount is real, the warranty is the catch
Most of Bestway's above-ground range carries a published 180-day warranty that starts the day you buy. Order in mid-October and it expires in mid-April - before the pool goes up. Two models in the range carry two years, and those are the ones to buy now.

Heads up: we earn a commission if you buy through the links on this page, at no extra cost to you. It never decides the ranking — here is how we pick and here is the full disclosure. Prices are checked automatically; last verified October 17, 2026.
The short version
- Most of the Bestway range is 180 days. Published for Fast Set, Steel Pro, Steel Pro MAX and Power Steel.
- The clock starts at purchase or delivery, whichever is later. Not at setup. Bestway publishes no pause for storage.
- Buy on 2026-10-17 and a 180-day cover ends about 2027-04-15. Before the pool holds water in most of the country.
- APX 365, TANX and Hydrium publish two years on liner and frame. Those are the off-season-safe buys.
If you are buying a pool in October for next summer, buy one of the models with a published two-year term and inspect the box the day it arrives. Everything else in the mainstream range carries 180 days, and 180 days bought now is gone before the water goes in.
The off-season is a genuinely good time to buy a pool. It is also the one purchase decision in this category where the sticker price is not the thing to read first.
What Bestway actually publishes
Two sentences on Bestway’s warranty page decide this whole question. The first is the start date:
Setup is not mentioned. Storage is not mentioned. The page does list “improper storage or handling” as an exclusion, but nowhere does it suspend the period while a pool sits in a box. The second thing it publishes is the length, and it varies more than most buyers would guess:
| Model | Published period | Bought 2026-10-17, expires about |
|---|---|---|
| Fast Set 78 in x 20 ft and above | 180 days | 2027-04-15 |
| Steel Pro | 180 days | 2027-04-15 |
| Steel Pro MAX | 180 days | 2027-04-15 |
| Power Steel | 180 days | 2027-04-15 |
| APX 365 | 2 years liner and frame, 180 days pump | 2028-10-17 / 2027-04-15 |
| TANX Pool | 2 years pool and liner, 180 days pump | 2028-10-17 / 2027-04-15 |
| Hydrium | 2 years liner and frame, 180 days pump | 2028-10-17 / 2027-04-15 |
| Ladders, covers, ground cloths, maintenance equipment | 90 days | 2027-01-15 |

About 2027-04-15
Why that matters more than it sounds
A warranty that expires before first use would be a technicality if pools failed randomly through their lives. They do not. The failures these terms cover - a liner seam, a frame member that will not seat, a pump that will not prime or leaks at a fitting - are overwhelmingly first-fill failures. They are found on the day the pool goes up, which on an off-season purchase is the day after the cover ran out.
Our delivery and check guide argues that a pool should be unboxed and inventoried on arrival rather than in May. On an off-season purchase that stops being good practice and becomes the only protection you have: a missing part or a damaged liner found in October is a conversation with a live warranty, and the same thing found in May is a conversation with an expired one.
The models where the wait is free
Three ranges in Bestway’s published table carry two years on the liner and frame: APX 365, TANX and Hydrium. These are the heavier end of the range - steel-wall and reinforced-frame pools rather than Fast Set ring pools - and on an off-season purchase the longer term is worth real money rather than being a marketing number.
Note the split, though. All three publish 180 days on the pump alongside the two years on the pool. So even on the best-covered models, the filter pump’s warranty is spent by mid-April. If you buy in October and the pump will not start in May, that is yours. Testing the pump is not practical in winter, which makes the published pump term the one genuinely unavoidable cost of buying early.
The one lever an off-season buyer has
Bestway’s wording is “purchase or ... delivery ... whichever is later”. That phrasing exists to stop a warranty running while a product sits in a distribution center, and it cuts the buyer’s way too: a purchase now with delivery scheduled for spring starts the clock in spring.
Whether any given seller will hold a pool until April is a question for the seller, and for most online orders the answer is no. It is worth asking on a large steel-wall pool bought direct, where delivery is scheduled anyway. It is not worth trying to engineer by refusing delivery.
What we could not verify
Intex’s warranty terms. Its warranty page returns a 404, and the Intex above-ground pool pages we were able to read carry no warranty text and no link to any. That is not proof that Intex publishes nothing - only that we could not find it on the pages we could read, and we are not going to quote a term we have not seen. If you are buying an Intex pool off-season, the terms in the box are the terms, and reading them in October rather than in May is the whole point of this page.
We also have no citable price-history data, so there is no claim here about the size of an off-season discount. The live prices in the buy buttons on this site are the current figures, refreshed daily, and they are the only price numbers we will publish.
What else changes if you buy now
Storage, which is not free
A boxed pool is heavy, bulky and must be kept dry. Bestway’s exclusions specifically name “improper storage or handling, including storage or handling not in accordance with the technical recommendations in the owner’s manual” - so read the manual’s storage section in October, not in May. Our pool storage guide covers the same ground for a used pool. The site prep you can actually do now
This is the real off-season advantage and it has nothing to do with price. Ground leveling is easier before the grass grows, and our leveling guide is the one job that most decides whether year one goes well. A pool bought in October with the ground prepared over winter goes up in a weekend. The chemicals, which keep unevenly
Buying the pool early does not mean buying everything early. Our chemical storage guide is clear that liquid chlorine should be used rather than stored and that test strips read wrong rather than simply failing. Tablets and shock keep; strips and liquid do not. What it still costs to run
None of this changes the season-one bill, which is the number this site exists to publish. Our annual running cost guide prices electricity, chemicals, water and consumables with the arithmetic shown. Buy the pool cheap in winter if you like - the pool is the small number.
What to buy
Scores are our own reading of published specifications. They are not test results — we have not tested these products and we do not claim to.

The deep end of the above-ground category
Bestway APX 365 20' x 52" Round Pool Set
Bestway
A 52-inch wall at 20 feet across, shipped with a sand filter rather than a cartridge. This is the size where an above-ground pool stops behaving like a seasonal purchase and starts behaving like a pool.

What works
- 52 inches of wall is chest-deep on most adults, which changes what the pool is for
- Sand filtration as standard, so there is no cartridge treadmill at this volume
- Ladder and cover in the box rather than as three separate purchases
- At 8,781 gallons the water is slow to swing, which makes chemistry more forgiving
What doesn't
- 314 square feet of ground held level to about an inch is a real job, not an afternoon
- Everything downstream scales with the water: chemicals, filling, heating and pump hours
- Too heavy and too large to move once filled, and awkward to take down each autumn
- Needs a genuinely clear, flat area that many yards do not have
Skip it if: Small or sloped yards. This is the size that punishes an imperfect base, and out-of-level failure at this volume is structural rather than cosmetic.
What it costs to run: Filling 8,781 gallons at the EPA WaterSense average of $6.06 per 1,000 gallons is about $53 of water, once. Every recurring line — chemicals, pump hours, heat loss across a larger surface — scales with it too.
Several seasons: Buy-once. Built and warranted to come back out of the box for a few years, if you store it properly.

What works
- The only pick here that ships genuinely complete — pump, ladder, ground cover and cover all included
- Galvanized steel walls rated by the maker to stay up year-round
- Assembly measured in hours rather than a weekend, which is unusual for a steel-wall pool
- A mainstream brand with parts and support that are easy to find
What doesn't
- Two years on the frame and liner, and only 180 days on the pump — short for a pool meant to stay up
- Galvanized steel rather than resin-coated, which matters if you plan to run a salt system
- Bestway itself describes it as semi-permanent, which is a fair description
- At 7,192 gallons, everything downstream scales up: chemicals, filling and pump hours
Skip it if: Being a twenty-year purchase. It is a well-equipped pool you can leave up, with a warranty that assumes you will be replacing parts sooner than a premium steel-wall kit.
What it costs to run: Filling 7,192 gallons at the EPA WaterSense average of $6.06 per 1,000 gallons is about $44 of water. Because it stays up, you are not refilling every spring — which is the running-cost argument for a permanent pool.
Several seasons: Buy-once. Built and warranted to come back out of the box for a few years, if you store it properly.

The honest middle of the market
Bestway Steel Pro MAX Pool Set, 15ft x 42in
Bestway
Fewer gallons and a shallower wall than the Intex flagship, which makes it easier to level, cheaper to fill and cheaper to keep clean. For most first-pool families this is the right size, not the compromise size.

Overall 8.2 / 10
What works
- 3,955 gallons is roughly 43% less water than the 18ft Intex — that is 43% less chemical spend, every season, forever
- 42-inch wall is far more forgiving of a yard that is nearly-but-not-quite level
- Ladder and cover included
- Cartridge filtration means no sand to buy or change
What doesn't
- Cartridges are a recurring consumable, and in a busy pool you will rinse one weekly
- 42 inches is shallow for adults who want to actually swim rather than sit
- Wattage is not published, so the running-cost math needs the label on the box
Skip it if: Adults who want to swim lengths. At 42 inches you are sitting in it, not swimming in it.
What it costs to run: The gallons are the story. Chemical dosing scales with volume, so 3,955 gallons costs meaningfully less to sanitize all season than 6,981 does. Filling it once at the EPA WaterSense national average of $6.06 per 1,000 gallons is about $24 of water; the same fill on the 18ft Intex is about $42.
Several seasons: Buy-once. Built and warranted to come back out of the box for a few years, if you store it properly.

A family that will still be using it in year three
Intex Ultra XTR Frame Pool Set, 18ft x 52in
Intex
The biggest, sturdiest thing in this class that a homeowner can still put up in a weekend. It is also, by a wide margin, the most expensive one to run.

Overall 8.4 / 10
What works
- 6,981 gallons is genuinely swimmable for adults, not just a cooling-off pool
- Sand filter rather than a cartridge, so there is no cartridge to buy every few weeks
- Galvanized frame with inner and outer powder coating is the most corrosion-resistant construction in this price class
- Ships with the ladder, cover and ground cloth that cheaper kits make you buy separately
What doesn't
- 52 inches of wall on an 18-foot circle is a lot of water pressure — the ground under it has to be genuinely level
- Intex publishes flow rate but not wattage, so you cannot compute your running cost until the pump is in your hands
- Too heavy and too large to take down and put up casually
Skip it if: Your yard is not close to level, or you want a pool you can pack away mid-season. Nearly 7,000 gallons is not a thing you move.
What it costs to run: It is the most water in this roundup, so it is the most chemicals, the most evaporation and the largest pump. Using ENERGY STAR's own published figures for above-ground pool pumps (an ENERGY STAR model saves about $20 a year, being 11% more efficient), a standard above-ground pump implies roughly $182 a year in electricity — and that is before you scale for a 2,100 GPH sand filter running on a pool this size. Price the season before you price the pool.

What works
- A rectangle that fits a normal suburban yard without dominating it
- Ground cloth, cover, ladder and dispenser all included
- 48 inch walls are easier to level for and cheaper to fill than 52
- Seal and Lock connectors are aimed at the rust point where frame pools usually fail
What doesn't
- The pump rating is stated two different ways on the same retailer page
- No live Bestway page for this model, so the maker's own specification cannot be checked
- No published warranty
- Soft-lawn installations need timber boards under the support feet, per Bestway's rectangular manual
Skip it if: Depth. At 48 inches it is a shallower pool than the 52 inch class, which for adults who want to swim rather than stand is the specification that matters most.
What it costs to run: Under 4,000 gallons keeps everything cheap: about $24 of water to fill at the EPA WaterSense average, and chemical doses sized to a small pool all season.
Several seasons: Buy-once. Built and warranted to come back out of the box for a few years, if you store it properly.

What works
- A permanent steel-wall pool in a footprint most yards can actually level
- A 25-gauge liner, heavier than you usually get at this size
- Six-inch steel top ledge rather than a narrow frame-pool rail
- Stays up, so there is no annual take-down and refill
What doesn't
- No pump or filter in the box — budget for one, and size it to the pool
- 48-inch walls, so it is shallower than the 52-inch pools in this roundup
- Capacity is not published; you will need to work out your gallons before dosing anything
- Painted galvanized steel rather than resin-coated walls
Skip it if: Being a complete purchase. It is a pool kit, and the pump, ladder and cover are separate decisions you still have to make.
What it costs to run: The pool price is not the project price: add a filter pump, a ladder rated for a 48-inch wall and a winter cover. Our equipment and seasonal hubs cover all three.
