Floats & Fun · Best Pool Towel
The best poolside towels, with the fabric weight worked out
Buy the heavy cotton cabana towels to get dry and the oversized blend to cover a lounger. The spec that separates them, fabric weight per square meter, is published by nobody - so this page computes it from the figures that are published.

That is roughly 2.5 times the oversized chambray set, and it is why this is the one that dries a person rather than a surface. | The heaviest fabric here, by the arithmeticSeveral seasons | 7.5out of 10 |
Best for covering a lounger, and for buying six at once
Thirty-nine by seventy-one inches each, in a published 70/30 cotton-polyester chambray. Computes to about 200 g/m2, which is what pays for the published 3x faster drying.

The short version
- No pool towel here publishes a GSM. Every one publishes dimensions and weight, so the density can be computed - and it is the only quantitative comparison the category allows.
- About 490 against about 200 g/m2. The all-cotton cabana towel carries roughly two and a half times the cloth per square meter of the oversized blend.
- “Turkish” means nothing on its own. It is on both ends of that 2.5x range. Read the fiber content and the weight.
- The computed figures are an inference, not a measurement. Weight and area are published; GSM is our arithmetic on them, and the inputs are shown below.
Buy the heavy all-cotton cabana towels if the job is getting dry, and the oversized blend if the job is covering a sun lounger. Those are two different products that look like the same purchase, and the figure that separates them is not printed on either box. It is, however, computable from figures that are printed - so that is what this page does.
The spec the towel aisle will not give you
Towel density is measured in grams per square meter. It is the industry’s own standard figure, it is what decides how much water a towel can hold, and it is the number a buyer would want.
None of the pool towels we looked at publishes it. What they publish instead is adjectives: soft, absorbent, fluffy, luxury, premium, thirsty. This is the same pattern our float brand comparison ran into, where no maker at any price publishes a vinyl gauge and the premium language is entirely qualitative.
The difference is that towels publish two things floats mostly do not: exact dimensions and an item weight. Those two numbers are GSM.
Computing the fabric weight the listings do not publish
- Chakir cabana, 4-pack
- 5.04 lb published / 4 towels, each 30 x 60 in
- LANE LINEN oversized, 6-pack
- 4.7 lb published / 6 towels, each 39 x 71 in
- Widdonen microfiber, single
- 0.73 lb published, 71 x 32 in

(pack weight / towels) in grams / (length x width in square meters) = g per square meter
About 490, 200 and 225 g/m2
| Towel | Published size | Published weight each | Computed g/m2 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chakir cabana, 100% cotton | 30 x 60 in | About 1.26 lb | About 490 |
| Widdonen microfiber | 71 x 32 in | 0.73 lb | About 225 |

What the arithmetic actually tells you
Three things, and the first one is the useful one.
The oversized “Turkish” towel is a light towel. At about 200 g/m2 computed it is the thinnest fabric here by some margin, and that is not a defect - it is the design. The listing publishes that it “air-dries up to 3x faster than heavy terry cloth”, and 30 percent polyester in a chambray weave is how you get there. You are buying coverage and dry time, not absorbency.
The cheapest towel is not the thinnest. The microfiber towel computes to about 225 g/m2, above the oversized cotton blend, while weighing a fifth as much per towel - because it is a small amount of very tightly packed synthetic fiber. Per square meter of actual cloth, it is the best value on this page.
The heavy cotton towel is heavy by a factor, not a feeling. About 490 g/m2 against about 200 is roughly two and a half times the material. That is the entire difference between a towel that dries an adult and one that spreads the water around, and it costs well under twice as much per towel.
Three towels, three jobs
Getting dry: heavy, all cotton, small
Thirty by sixty inches sounds mean next to a 39 x 71 in “oversized” towel, and it holds far more water. All cotton with no polyester working against absorbency, double- stitched hems published, and the one genuinely useful care instruction in this category: no fabric softener, because the chemicals coat the fibers.
The cost is dry time. A 490 g/m2 towel takes a long time to dry and will not be ready for the afternoon swim. That is the trade, and it is the right trade for the towel that lives by the back door.
Covering a lounger: big, light, six of them
A 39 x 71 in towel covers a full sun lounger, which is most of what poolside towels actually do. At the computed density it dries quickly, packs small, and comes six to a box for less than four of the heavy cotton ones - so there is always a clean one for a guest.
It also carries the only third-party certification on this page, OEKO-TEX, which is a published testing scheme rather than a brand claim. Worth something; not a density figure.
The bag, the car, the winter tub walk
Microfiber exists for the trip between the house and the water, and it earns its place in a household that uses an inflatable hot tub through winter - where the walk is short, cold, and happens every day, and a cotton towel never gets a chance to dry. It folds to phone size, it costs almost nothing, and it does not feel like a towel.
What nobody publishes, and what that means
Beyond GSM, three gaps are worth naming. No towel here publishes a chlorine-resistance claim, so we will not make one on their behalf. No towel publishes a thread count or a pile height, so the weave cannot be compared beyond the fiber percentages. And the microfiber towel does not publish its blend at all - “microfiber” is the whole material specification.
We also have not washed these fifty times, so nothing here is a claim about how they age. The published care instructions are the best available guide to that, and the one published warning - skip the fabric softener - is the one most households ignore.

Pick #1 · The heaviest fabric here, by the arithmetic
Chakir Turkish Linens Cabana Stripe Pool Towels, 4-Pack
Chakir Turkish Linens
The only 100 percent cotton towel in this group, and by a long way the densest: a published 5.04 lb across four 30 x 60 in towels works out at about 490 g/m2 computed. That is roughly 2.5 times the oversized chambray set, and it is why this is the one that dries a person rather than a surface.

What works
- Densest fabric in this comparison once weight is divided by area, and density is what absorbs
- All cotton, so there is no polyester content working against absorbency
- Double-stitched hems published, which is where a pool towel fails first
- Publishes the fabric-softener warning that explains why old towels stop absorbing
What doesn't
- Heaviest to dry, which is the direct cost of the density
- Smallest towel here at 30 x 60 in, so it does not cover a lounger
- Dearest per towel in this group
- Chlorine is hard on cotton over seasons, and no chlorine-resistance claim is published
Skip it if: Drying quickly, or lying on. This is a towel for getting dry and going inside. If it needs to be back in service the same afternoon, or to cover a sun lounger, buy the oversized set instead.
What it costs to run: Density is the thing being priced. About 490 g/m2 computed against about 200 for the oversized chambray set means roughly 2.5 times the cotton per square meter — at well under twice the price per towel on the live figures shown here.
Several seasons: Buy-once. Built and warranted to come back out of the box for a few years, if you store it properly.

Pick #2 · Covering a lounger, and the cheapest way to get six towels
LANE LINEN Oversized Turkish-Weave Pool Towels, 6-Pack
LANE LINEN
Six 39 x 71 in towels in a published 70/30 cotton-polyester chambray weave, with a published claim of air-drying up to 3x faster than terry. The arithmetic shows what pays for that: about 200 g/m2 computed, roughly 40 percent of the cotton density of the Chakir set.

What works
- Big enough to cover a full lounger at a published 39 x 71 in, which the cotton set is not
- The dry-time claim is quantified at 3x rather than left as "quick dry"
- OEKO-TEX certification is a published third-party scheme rather than a brand claim
- Six towels for less than four of the heavy cotton ones
What doesn't
- About 200 g/m2 computed is the lightest real fabric here, and light fabric pushes water around rather than absorbing it
- 30 percent polyester is what makes it dry fast and what makes it absorb less
- No GSM published, so the density has to be computed from weight and area
- Thin towels feel thin, and that is the honest consequence of the trade
Skip it if: Drying an adult properly. Treat these as lounger covers, pool-bag towels and spares for guests, and keep heavier cotton by the door for actually getting dry.
What it costs to run: Per square meter of fabric this is the cheapest towel here and per gram of cotton it is not. The computed 200 g/m2 against the Chakir set's 490 is the arithmetic that explains both the price and the feel.
One honest season: The cheapest setup that genuinely works for a season of real swimming. Nothing spare, nothing missing.

Pick #3 · The pool bag, the car and the hot tub walk
Widdonen Microfiber Beach and Pool Towel, 71 x 32 in
Widdonen
A single 71 x 32 in microfiber towel at a published 0.73 lb, which computes to about 225 g/m2 — denser per square meter than the oversized cotton-blend set and a fraction of its bulk. Folds to phone size, which is the actual reason to own one.

What works
- Computes denser per square meter than the oversized cotton-blend towels despite weighing a fifth as much
- Packs to nothing, which is the one thing cotton cannot do
- Dries fast enough to be reused the same day, which matters for a tub used daily in winter
- Cheapest towel on this page by a wide margin
What doesn't
- The fiber blend is not published, so "microfiber" is the whole material specification
- Synthetic towels hold odor if they are packed away damp, repeatedly
- Thin and slippery to lie on compared with cotton terry
- Printed rather than woven color, so it will fade
Skip it if: Feeling like a towel. Microfiber works and it does not feel like cotton; buy it for the bag and the winter tub walk, not as the towel by the shower.
One honest season: The cheapest setup that genuinely works for a season of real swimming. Nothing spare, nothing missing.
